Mix your own rap songs: A starter framework that actually works

Ask online how to mix your own songs and you'll get contradictory advice, forty plugin recommendations, and someone telling you not to bother until you've bought monitors that cost more than your car. Ignore all of it. Mixing a rap song is a learnable craft with a small number of decisions that matter enormously and a large number that barely matter at all.
This guide is the framework: what mixing actually is, the order to do things in, the problems specific to rap that sink most bedroom mixes, and how to know when you're done. You don't need golden ears. You need a repeatable process and a reference track keeping you honest.
Mixing vs. mastering, in plain English
Mixing is balancing the individual tracks in your session — vocal, doubles, ad-libs, and every element of the beat — so they work together as one coherent record. You're setting levels, carving EQ so instruments don't fight over the same frequencies, controlling dynamics with compression, placing things left-to-right and front-to-back, and adding space with reverb and delay. Mixing is where a pile of tracks becomes a song, and it's where almost all of the audible difference between amateur and professional records lives.
Mastering is what happens after the mix: a final polish applied to the single stereo file your mix exports. A mastering engineer (or an algorithm — more on that later) makes small EQ and dynamics adjustments, brings the track to a competitive loudness, and makes sure it translates across systems and sits consistently next to other songs on a playlist or album. Mastering is a thin final coat. It cannot fix a bad mix, and a good mix needs surprisingly little of it.
The rap mix hierarchy: know what's on top
Here's the thing that makes rap mixing genuinely different from mixing a rock band: rap has a strict hierarchy, and everything flows from respecting it.
- The vocal sits on top. Always. Louder, drier, and more upfront than feels natural at first. In a band mix the vocal is one instrument among equals, blended into a wall of guitars. In rap, the vocal is the song — every word intelligible, planted confidently above the beat. If a listener misses a bar, the mix failed, no matter how good it sounds otherwise.
- The kick and 808 own the low end — together. They're the engine of the record and the second priority. Their relationship (covered below) is the single most rap-specific problem you'll solve.
- Everything else fits underneath and around. Hi-hats, melodies, pads, samples — they support. If a melody loop is fighting your vocal for attention, the loop loses. Turn it down or carve it out.
Internalize this and half your mixing decisions make themselves. When two elements clash, the hierarchy tells you which one moves.
Start with gain staging (yes, it's boring; do it anyway)
Before you open a single plugin, spend ten minutes on levels — the least glamorous, highest-leverage step in mixing.
Pull every fader down, then bring tracks up one at a time in order of the hierarchy: kick and 808 first, then vocal, then everything else. Get the song sounding as close to right as you can with faders alone — no EQ, no compression. A shocking amount of "mixing" is just balance, and a mix that works with bare faders needs only light processing on top. A mix that doesn't will not be rescued by plugins.
While you do this, watch your mix bus (the master output). Standard guidance: keep the whole mix peaking around -6 dB on the master, with no individual track slamming its meter. The vocal chain, in mix context

EQ: cut before you boost. High-pass the vocal around 80–120 Hz to clear space for the 808, then hunt the ugly frequencies — mud around 200–400 Hz, boxiness in the mids, one harsh resonance somewhere in the 2–5 kHz zone — and cut them a few dB. Only after the cuts, consider a gentle high-shelf boost for air. Cuts sound natural; big boosts sound processed. This is the most repeated advice in mixing because it's the most ignored.
Compression in stages, not one crusher. Rap vocals need a lot of level control — but the pro move is serial compression: two (sometimes three) compressors in a row, each doing a modest 2–3 dB of gain reduction, rather than one compressor smashing 8 dB. Each stage barely works, so no single stage sounds like it's working, and the vocal ends up dense and planted without the pumping, choked quality of one over-driven compressor. If you can hear the compressor breathing, back it off and let the next one in line share the load.
De-ess after compression. Compression and brightening both exaggerate "S" sounds, so the de-esser goes after them in the chain, set for a few dB of reduction only when sibilance actually hits. Natural S's at normal volume; no lisp.
That's the mix-stage vocal work. Doubles and ad-libs get simpler versions of the same chain, tucked underneath the lead per the hierarchy.
The 808 and the kick: rap's signature problem
The kick drum and the 808 bass both live in the low end, both hit hard, and — left alone — both smear into one indistinct boom. This is the most common fatal flaw in bedroom rap mixes, and there are two mainstream fixes. Use either; many mixes use both.
EQ-carve them apart. Decide who owns which zone. A common split: let the kick keep its punchy attack (a bump somewhere in the 60–100 Hz range plus its click up higher) and give the 808 the sub territory below, cutting each modestly where the other lives. They stop overlapping, and suddenly you hear both.
Sidechain the 808 to the kick. Put a compressor on the 808 triggered by the kick, so the 808 ducks a few dB for a split second every time the kick hits, then swells back. The kick punches through cleanly; the 808 sustains underneath. Nearly every DAW's stock compressor has a sidechain input, and a subtle setting (2–4 dB of ducking, fast release) is all you need.
And one thing that isn't a mix move but ruins mixes anyway: tune your 808s to the song's key. An 808 is a pitched instrument — a sine-ish bass note — and if it plays notes outside the key, the track sounds subtly, unfixably wrong in a way listeners feel instantly even if they can't name it. No EQ fixes an out-of-key 808. Check the key of your melody, check the notes your 808 pattern plays, and move any offenders. If you bought the beat, a competent producer already did this; if you're making your own, it's a thirty-second check that saves the record.
Space and depth: one reverb, one delay, on sends
Beginners put a different reverb on every track and drown the song. The mainstream pro setup is almost comically simple: one reverb and one delay for the whole mix, each on its own send/aux track, with individual tracks sending varying amounts into them. Everything shares the same space, so the mix sounds like one room instead of nine.
Two refinements: filter the reverb return — high-pass it around 300 Hz and shave the top so the wet signal adds depth without adding mud or hiss — and lean on delay more than reverb for the lead vocal, which keeps it upfront and dry-sounding while still having space behind it.
While you're thinking spatially: keep the power elements — lead vocal, kick, 808, snare — dead center in mono, and pan the supporting cast (doubles, ad-libs, hats, melodic layers) off-center for width. Check the mix in mono once before you finish — if the 808 or hook vanishes when summed, you've got phase problems to hunt down.
Reference mixing: the one habit that fixes bedroom mixes
If you take exactly one thing from this guide, take this: pick two commercially released songs in your lane and A/B against them constantly while you mix.
Import them straight into your session on their own track. Every few minutes, flip over: how loud is their vocal against the beat? How much low end is actually there? Then flip back to yours and adjust. One catch — commercial releases are mastered louder than your working mix, so turn the references down to match your mix's volume before comparing. Louder always sounds "better" to human ears; an unmatched comparison teaches you nothing except that mastered songs are loud.
This habit fixes bedroom mixes because it solves the real underlying problem: your ears drift. After forty minutes in a session, you have no absolute sense of how bright, bassy, or vocal-forward your mix is. The reference is a fixed landmark. Every professional mixer references; skip it and you're the one wondering why last night's masterpiece sounds underwater this morning.
Loudness reality: stop chasing the limiter
Here's the part of mixing culture that's genuinely obsolete in 2026: slamming a limiter to make your track as loud as possible.
Every major streaming service uses loudness normalization — it measures your track and turns it down (or up) to a consistent playback level. Spotify normalizes to roughly -14 LUFS by default (listeners can pick quieter or louder settings), and Apple Music's Sound Check targets about -16 LUFS. In practice: crush your mix 4 dB louder than everyone else's, and Spotify simply turns it down 4 dB — same playback volume, dynamics gone. All cost, no benefit. The loudness war ended; the platforms won.
So mix with your -6 dB of headroom, master to a healthy level without flattening it — the commonly cited comfortable zone for rap lands around -14 to -9 LUFS integrated, true peaks under about -1 dB — and stop comparing your unmastered mix's loudness to finished commercial records. Punchy beats crushed every time.
The tools question: stock plugins are enough
You can execute everything in this guide with the plugins that shipped with your DAW. The stock EQ, compressor, and delay in Logic, FL Studio, Ableton, Reaper, or even GarageBand are better than the expensive plugins of fifteen years ago, and no listener can hear the difference between your stock high-pass filter and a $200 one.
If you want to add exactly two free plugins, the current standouts remain TDR Nova (a free dynamic EQ that handles surgical cuts and de-essing at a level competitive with paid tools) and Valhalla Supermassive (a free reverb/delay from Valhalla DSP that's genuinely exceptional, not "good for free"). The car test, the earbud test
Your mixing setup lies to you — every setup does — so before calling a mix done, play it everywhere your listeners will: the car (the classic, because car systems exaggerate low end and expose 808/kick problems instantly), cheap earbuds and your phone speaker (where most people will actually hear it — if the vocal or the 808's presence disappears on a phone, fix it), and one quiet, low-volume listen, where balance problems hidden at hype volume become obvious. A mix that survives all three translates. That's the actual goal — not perfection on one pair of headphones.
When to stop: the 80% rule
Bedroom mixes don't usually die from lack of skill. They die from overworking — the fourteenth revision where you're EQing hi-hats by half a decibel while the song's release date slides another month.
Adopt the 80% rule: when the mix hits the hierarchy (vocal clear and on top, kick and 808 coexisting, nothing fighting), survives the car and earbud tests, and holds up next to your references at matched volume — ship it. The last 20% you're chasing is mostly inaudible to every listener you're trying to reach, and the ear fatigue of hour six is actively making your decisions worse. A finished 80% mix in the world beats a theoretical 100% mix on your hard drive, and the fastest way to get better at mixing is to finish more mixes, not to polish one forever.
Mix your catalog yourself; hire for the big single
The honest DIY-versus-pro answer: do both, in that order. Mix your own early catalog — every song compounds your skills, sharpens your ear for your own voice, and makes you a better client later. Then, when a release has real stakes — the single you're pushing, the track going into competition — consider hiring. As of 2026, competent independent mix engineers who work in rap typically run about $100–400 per song, with newer engineers below that and name engineers with major credits well above. Ask for before/afters in your genre and expect a revision round included. What you're buying is a treated room and a few thousand reps of ear training — worth it for the big moments, overkill for the weekly drops.
And the AI mastering question, since you'll ask: services like LANDR (from a few dollars per track or via subscription), eMastered, and BandLab's free mastering tool are real and reasonable for what they are — a fast, cheap loudness-and-polish pass on an already-good mix, legitimate for frequent independent releases. What they can't do is judge: they can't tell you your vocal is buried or your 808 is out of key — they polish whatever they're handed, problems included. AI mastering on a solid mix: fine. AI mastering as a rescue mission: no. The mix is still your job.
